Dried Legumes

Heirloom Monachella di Abruzzo Dried Beans
These eye-catching purple and white dried beans are a little-known varietal outside of the region of Abruzzo, Italy. Our producer, Fior di Maiella, found this bean growing voluntarily among his sweet Altino pepper plants. He decided to work with nature and let these companion plants flourish together. These newly-rediscovered heirloom beans, were cultivated from a handful of seed beans from which Fior di Maiella produced a first crop of this long forgotten variety called Monachelle (little nuns) or Socere e Nore (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law) for their bold contrasting colors. These beautiful beans are grown between crops of Altino Sweet Peppers to replenish the soil, Once ready they are hand harvested and dried in small batches. They represent the incredible biodiversity of Abruzzo's food crops, a true "cibo ritrovato".

Four Bean Blend of Slow Food Presidia Beans
Like all Slow Food Presidio products, this bean blend is meant to help farmers protect plant biodiversity, support sustainable agriculture and invigorate small farms and their products. This blend of beans from four Slow Food Presidi also represents three regions of Italy: from Campania come the famed Controne white beans and Cicerale chickpeas, from Tuscany red beans of Lucca, and from Le Marche the rare Cicerchie of Serra di Conti. This blend is a result of painstaking research by Michele Ferrante and his partners in the Slow Food movement. RITROVO® is proud to import this precious blend of dried legumes as a great addition to our beloved Michele Ferrante Controne Beans. By Michele Ferrante.
